  • Celtics reportedly make intriguing frontcourt addition in free agency

The Boston Celtics already picked up one former Minnesota Timberwolves forward in free agency in Luka Garza.

And the Celtics went that route again Tuesday to add to their frontcourt.

ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported that the Celtics signed forward Josh Minott to a two-year, $5 million deal. Minott is still just 22 years old and spent the last three seasons with the Timberwolves after being drafted 45th overall by Minnesota in 2022.

Minott played sparingly during his time with the Timberwolves. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward suited up in just 93 games since he entered the league, with half of those appearances coming this past season. Minott averaged just 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 46 games during the 2024-25 campaign and he is a career 33.9% shooter from 3-point range.

It seems Minott, who played collegiately at Memphis, wanted a change of scenery. The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski reported that Minott requested that the Timberwolves decline his $2.19 million team option so that he could look to obtain a larger on-court role elsewhere.

Minott might just get that with the Celtics as the illustrious franchise has peeled off pieces of their roster this offseason to lessen the financial burden they face. Minott could get more playing time with the Celtics thin in the frontcourt after they saw Luke Kornet sign with the San Antonio Spurs in free agency and it still being unclear if veteran big man Al Horford will return for a 19th NBA season.

Minott is expected to compete more on the wing with Baylor Scheierman, Sam Hauser and Jordan Walsh for a spot in Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.
