The St. Louis Cardinals are frankly in a decent position moving forward. While their farm system isn’t great, the Cardinals hold the fifth overall pick, and if they knock that pick out of the park, they could find themselves in a position to start winning ball games at a very high level once again in the near future.
The Cardinals will have to start spending more money on better players, but if they pick the right one at No. 5, it could give them even more incentive to do so.
Holding the fifth overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft, MLB.com recently looked at who they would select. They had them taking Jamie Arnold, a left-hander out of Florida State, who is widely regarded as one of the top college arms in the nation.
“If the Cardinals want to go with a college pitcher, Arnold could be the top choice, or they could look at right-hander Kyson Witherspoon. This would be the absolute floor for Holliday, but with him gone, they could look at other high school bats like Willits or fellow shortstop Billy Carlson. This is the first spot I’ve heard Ike Irish’s name, perhaps in a money-saving deal,” they wrote.
In a perfect world, the Cardinals would select either Arnold or another left-hander in the form of Kade Anderson. Anderson is slated as a top-two pick, so it’s unlikely that he lands with the Cardinals.

Regarding Arnold, many believe that he could fall to five. If he does, the Cardinals have no reason not to take him.
Taking a left-hander with his type of stuff is always a wise decision, as he should be someone who could make his debut rather quickly in Major League Baseball.
