  • Braves cut ties with CF whiz to make room for veteran’s return from injury

The Atlanta Braves only gave a single plate appearance to their newest outfielder before designating him for assignment.

They made the move Monday to remove Jose Azocar from the 40-man roster. He’ll go on waivers.

The decision was made in order to activate 29-year old outfielder Stuart Fairchild from the Injured List after a pinky injury.

Azocar has bounced around the last few months. He only just got to the Braves a couple weeks ago from the Mets.

He was once a top prospect in the Padres system, but his career hasn’t progressed as hoped.

The speedy Azocar does have an MLB-level glove in centerfield. With the Padres before his journeyman stage, Azocar had a +5 rating in Outs Above Average in CF.

He’s a good enough outfielder that he should be able to find a new team. He’s a career .244 hitter with quickness on the base paths along with the great glove.

Fairchild probably won’t have a big role with the Braves, either. But Atlanta probably likes his hitting potential a bit more than that of Azocar.

In reality, the Braves would prefer their star outfielders stay healthy and limit the reserves to as few of at bats as possible.

It hasn’t been a perfect start to the season in Atlanta, but there’s still a lot of time to turn things around.
