The Miami Dolphins and Jalen Ramsey were one of the NFL’s biggest offseason storylines.

After a long, drawn-out process that often spilled into the public eye, the Dolphins and Ramsey ultimately parted ways.

In a blockbuster trade just before teams began OTAs, Miami sent Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a late-round pick in next year’s draft.

Now, Ramsey has opened up about the move on The Pivot podcast, explaining how the trade came together and why Pittsburgh was the right fit.

“Things had to get put together the right way. Things had to come together from my standpoint, from the Dolphins to the Steelers,” Ramsey said. “I think all of us had to come to — I guess you could say agreement. Had to come to a consensus on what it would be.”

Ramsey made it clear he appreciated Miami for working with him and his agent and “doing things the right way.” But he also seemed to take a subtle shot at Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

“Let’s go to a team that’s going to be able to compete. Let’s go to a team where there’s a lot of respect for the head coach there, the staff,” Ramsey said.

One of the lingering narratives this offseason is that McDaniel has lost the locker room in Miami and doesn’t have the respect of his players. Former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel recently added fuel to that talk on his podcast, calling the Dolphins a mess.

“The Dolphins had no reason to trade Jalen Ramsey other than they’re sensitive, there’s no leadership in the Dolphins organization,” Samuel said. “Mike McDaniel is a pushover… Chris Grier — the general manager — he has no backbone… they’re running this team like a little league team. No one can stand up to the players. They’re terrified of their own players. And they have no control over their players.”

Whether or not that’s true, Ramsey’s comments about respect for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin certainly add intrigue to the speculation surrounding Miami
