After a disappointing Super Bowl earlier this year, the Kansas City Chiefs are moving forward. To keep their explosive offense thriving under Patrick Mahomes, one rookie could be ready to play a significant role despite being new to the team.

On Saturday, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wrote a piece spotlighting the players who look like this year’s draft steals. The preseason is underway, and rookies are flashing their potential, which could lead to bigger roles than expected.

“Rookie seventh-round pick Brashard Smith may play a surprisingly large role in the latter goal,” Knox wrote. “Smith’s compact (5’10”, 194 lbs) frame, pass-catching ability and 4.37-second speed make him an ideal chess piece for Andy Reid’s offense. He’s flashed that potential during camp.

“Even as a change-of-pace or dedicated receiving back, Smith can add a new quick-strike element to Kansas City’s offense. That would make him a massive draft bargain.”

After three underwhelming seasons as a wide receiver at the University of Miami, Smith transferred to SMU and switched positions to running back. The move paid off—he played in 14 games, racking up 274 touches for 1,659 yards and 18 touchdowns from scrimmage.

Smith’s ability to play from the ground and air will prove crucial as the Chiefs must improve their run game. Last season, Kansas City only recorded 1,790 rushing yards, the 11th worst in the league. However, the Chiefs were in the middle of the pack regarding rushing touchdowns (15) and rushing attempts (450).

Kansas City want to try and have a ground game that can take pressure off Mahomes, so they took a chance on Smith, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. If the Chiefs can hit on a late draft pick at a position they need to improve, then it would be a major steal as Smith can help the team’s offense in the air and on the ground.
