The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the signing of offensive lineman Andrus Peat on Thursday among four roster moves the team made.
Along with Peat, the Steelers signed quarterback Logan Woodside, which comes on the heels of Will Howard’s injury. In corresponding moves, Pittsburgh waived long snapper Tucker Addington and guard Nick Broeker.
One has to wonder if the Peat signing is in response to the struggles Broderick Jones has experienced in camp thus far.
Jones, who struggled in 2024, is making the move to left tackle this year and has been underwhelming thus far, according to reporters.
Peat has played guard for the majority of his career, and the former New Orleans Saints offensive lineman notched three Pro Bowl nods while playing the position years back.
However, the 31-year-old has also played at both tackle spots during his career, with most of his snaps coming on the left side.
He played nearly 1,100 snaps at the position between 2016 and 2017 (707 in 2016), and he played 715 and 11 snaps there the last two years, respectively. Peat spent the 2024 season with the Raiders, appearing in 15 games (one start).
Peat struggled mightily in his limited action, though, giving up one sack and three pressures in 38 pass-blocking snaps while posting Pro Football Focus grades of 30.8 in pass-blocking and 34.3 in run-blocking.
Now, nobody is saying Peat is any semblance of a threat to Jones, or whoever the Steelers deem as his top backup. But the signing could be an indication that Pittsburgh wants to give itself more options amid Jones’ struggles.
