The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten the best luck in terms of draft selection over the past few seasons, the two most recent resulting in top 10 picks at number seven last year and number five this year, using the former pick to draft shortstop J.J. Wetherholt, a top prospect out of West Virginia.

The 2025 season has seen Wetherholt steam roll through the minor league system, recently being called up to Triple A-Memphis, where he has been nothing short of phenomenal, with five home runs and nine RBI in just 15 games.

And after a recent announcement from Jeff Jones of the Belleville News Democrat that Wetherholt would be starting at third base Sunday for the Memphis Redbirds, so began speculation that the former first-round pick could be getting his call up to the majors soon.

With third baseman Nolan Arenado currently injured, the Cards are in need of a trusty replacement, and with how well the infielder has been in Double A and Triple A, and with the Cardinals postseason hopes continuing to slither away as they endure their struggling 2025 season, what would it hurt for the team to give their first pick in the 2024 draft a shot at the major league stage?
