The scene was set.

Major League Baseball, at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, the Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds.

It was a perfect setting, the auto-racing grandstand beyond the outfield fence.

Players took a pace lap in trucks around the NASCAR track before introductions.

Pitbull and Tim McGraw combined on a pregame concert.

Player intros included tires being changed by pit crews on cars with the Reds and Braves logos on them.

The uniforms were specialized, with the numerals scripted like NASCAR car numbers.

And then, at 7:20 p.m., after the national anthem, the skies opened up.

The tarp came onto the field.

The players huddled in the makeshift dugouts to stay dry.

A rain delay was underway, just before first pitch, with no certainty as to how long it would last.

It’s a serious bummer not just for the overall game but for what it might mean for the pitchers.

Spencer Strider is slated to go for Atlanta. Chase Burns is the man for the Reds.

Both had just completed their pregame warmups and were ready to go.

But after a long delay, how will the teams play it with their arms? Will they go through another partial warmup? Will the teams instead call on relievers to try and protect their hard-throwing righties?

In reality, the hope is just that the game happens. It can’t really be rescheduled. It’s a one-off showcase event of Major League Baseball.

Mother Nature apparently wanted to see how patient we could all be, because the Reds and Braves won’t start on time, and fans will just have to wait to see just how special an MLB game in a NASCAR track can be.
