The Milwaukee Brewers have surprisingly cemented themselves as one of the best teams in baseball. However, they still have needs to address at the trade deadline.

The Brewers have the best record in baseball, entering play on Thursday. If you look at the stats, they do not have many real holes. One could argue that the team could use upgrades over Caleb Durbin and Joey Ortiz, but both players have been playing well as of late.

Durbin is slashing .347/.422/.484 in his last 30 games. Ortiz is slashing .283/.311/.455 in his last 30 games and has some of the best defense on the team. In the outfield, Isaac Collins has outperformed expectations, and the team is pretty much set everywhere else. However, despite getting contributions from Durbin, Ortiz and Collins, the Brewers could look to replace one of them in favor of a player with more power.

The Brewers have the sixth-fewest home runs in baseball. While it has them atop the standings, power is a good trait for making a deep run in October. Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws and Nick Selbe predicted the Brewers would trade for Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline.

“McMahon is on pace to hit 20 homers for the sixth straight full season, an impressive accomplishment that’s somewhat lessened by playing half of his games at Coors Field—despite that fact, he’s never registered as an above-average bat by wRC+,” wrote Sports Illustrated. “His 125 strikeouts are the most in the NL and his OPS this season is nearly 300 points higher in Colorado (.868) compared to road games (.589). The 30-year-old is also set to make $16 million in each of the next two seasons, meaning the Rockies would likely have to pay part of his contract if they want to acquire a meaningful prospect package in a trade. Still, McMahon’s season statistics are about as consistent as they can get, and he could fill multiple spots around the infield for some playoff team.”

McMahon could be an ideal target for the Brewers. He could be cheap and could serve strictly as a power bat. He’s not been good enough to keep Durbin out of too many games, and could slot in as the DH on days Durbin is in the lineup. For a team lacking power, the Brewers would find a way to get him in the lineup no matter what.
