The Titans‘ QB room has taken a major hit weeks before the team’s first preseason game.

Will Levis, Tennessee’s second-round pick in 2023, is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder, the team announced Monday. The news ends any potential of a preseason QB competition with 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.

While most expected Ward to be named the Titans’ starter, Levis had the benefit of experience on his side, making 21 starts over the first two seasons of his NFL career. Now, Levis’ absence brings a new set of questions around Tennessee’s depth at the QB position.

Here is an updated look at the Titans’ QB depth chart after the news.

Titans QB depth chart

QB Player
1 Cam Ward
2 Brandon Allen
3 Tim Boyle
IR Will Levis

1. Cam Ward

Tennessee effectively handed the keys to Ward when it selected him first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Heisman finalist threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns last season at the University of Miami (FL), leading the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record. He is the third consecutive QB to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft, coming after Carolina‘s Bryce Young and Chicago‘s Caleb Williams.

2. Brandon Allen

Allen, who will be 33 this season, is a journeyman QB who spent the past two seasons in San Francisco.

Last season, Allen appeared in three games with the 49ers, including a Week 12 start against the Packers. Since 2016, Allen has suited up for the Jaguars, Rams, Broncos, Bengals, and Niners.

He has appeared in 18 games, made 10 starts, and thrown 11 touchdowns to eight interceptions.

3. Tim Boyle

Boyle will turn 31 this season and has been in the NFL since going undrafted in 2018. He spent the 2024 season with the Dolphins and Giants.

Throughout his seven-year career, Boyle has appeared in 23 games and made five starts. He last started for the Jets during the 2023 season, posting a 0-2 record as their QB1.

Boyle has thrown five touchdowns to 13 interceptions in his career.

IR: Will Levis

The Titans used the 33rd pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select Levis from Kentucky.

Levis began his career as Tennessee’s third-string QB behind Ryan Tannehill and Malik Willis. Levis did not make his NFL debut until Week 8, when he started and threw four touchdowns in a win over the Falcons. He was named QB1 after another solid showing in his second start.

With Tannehill and Willis gone in 2024, Levis began his second season atop the QB depth chart. Injuries hindered him, but Levis started in all 12 games he appeared in, throwing for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Will Levis injury update

Levis will undergo surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday, July 29. The surgery will hold Levis out for the entirety of the 2025 NFL season.

In an official release, the franchise shared the following statement:

After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health. He approached the offseason with professionalism and showed clear growth as a leader. We remain confident in his full recovery.

Levis first injured his shoulder in the Titans’ Week 4 win over the Dolphins. After a bye in Week 5, Levis attempted 27 passes in a Week 6 loss to Indianapolis before missing the team’s next three games.

He returned for another six games, missed two more, and played in the season finale. Levis appeared in a total of 12 games during the 2024 season.

According to reports, the lingering pain and discomfort from the injury contributed to the decision to undergo surgery.
