The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has dealt with some key injuries this year. After Clarke Schmidt’s injury, the team could be aggressive in adding a starter.

The Yankees have been without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil all season. Gil is expected to return soon, but the loss of Clarke Schmidt puts the team in a tough position. Max Fried and Carlos Rodón have been great, and getting Gil in the mix would give them a great trio. Ryan Yarbrough has also been good as a starter, and he could return soon as well.

Even when Yarbrough and Gil return, the Yankees could want some insurance. Marcus Stroman, Cam Schlittler and Will Warren may not be the most reliable options in October or if the Yankees suffer more injuries. Bleacher Report’s Tyler Ward listed the Yankees as a potential landing spot for Andrew Heaney of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Heaney pitched for the Yankees in 2021. He started five games, playing in 12 games total. He pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022 and the Texas Rangers in 2023 and last season. He won a World Series with the Rangers in 2023.

He is going to be a free agent after the season, and the Pirates are set up to be sellers at the trade deadline. Heaney could be a cheap addition for the Yankees.

He has a 4.59 ERA this season and is far from great. However, he could be a better option at the back of the rotation than Warren, Stroman or Schlittler in October.
