OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United host Aston Villa in need of a positive result to move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Manchester City‘s 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday dropped Michael Carrick’s side into the bottom three, with just seven points and a solitary win over Ipswich Town from their first nine matches.

Carrick’s job remains under scrutiny, although Tuesday’s 3-2 win from 2-0 down against Roma in the Champions League offered a timely morale boost.

“Against Roma, the connection between the players on the pitch and everyone inside the stadium created the kind of special atmosphere that will stay with all of us for a long time,” Carrick wrote in his matchday programme notes.

That atmosphere also featured protests against the co-ownership of the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Old Trafford and those are expected to continue against a Villa side, who are unbeaten in five Premier League matches but without a win in three across all competitions after a 3-0 loss at Barcelona in the Champions League.

Prematch

10:05 a.m. – All that said, United do have something to build on. Another awful first half against Roma in midweek was flipped on its head as a 2-0 deficit became an incredible 3-2 victory. Carrick needs that to be a springboard. And Villa, for all that their form since the early weeks of the season under Unai Emery has been rightly praised, might need a little bit of a momentum boost. A 1-1 draw at home to Fulham last weekend was dispiriting and a 3-0 loss at Barcelona in the Champions League made it three matches without a win in all competition.

9:50 a.m. – It might look even worse than the relegation zone at kickoff. Sunderland are a goal to the good at Chelsea. If that result holds, United will begin the Villa game in 19th. Crystal Palace are a goal down at home to Liverpool and set to be bottom of the pile during the international break, as things stand.

9:30 a.m. – Hello and welcome to the Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester United vs. Aston Villa in the Premier League. Villa are unbeaten in five league matches, while United start this afternoon in the relegation zone.
