It’s fair to say the 98th meeting between Utah and BYU is the most anticipated matchup in a rivalry that dates to 1922.

The Utes (8-0) are No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings and Associated Press Top 25, while the Cougars (7-1) are No. 7 in the AP poll and No. 9 according to the CFP. It’s the first time the two will play with both ranked in the top 10.

Utah has cruised through Morgan Scalley’s first season at the helm, winning six of its eight games by at least 14 points, though only one of those contests came against ranked opposition: a 21-13 win over No. 14 Houston two weeks ago.

The Cougars followed up their signature win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame with an agonizing double-overtime loss at UCF, the only blemish on their record, but bounced back to beat Arizona State on Halloween.

This game is always high-intensity, but this year the stakes are just as significant — not just in the Beehive State but in the national playoff picture.
