Everybody continues to question what the Philadelphia Phillies might do during Major League Baseball’s free agency, and a lot of it has come down to the question of whether they want to spend more to compete with this current core or move on from guys.

It almost feels like a lot of people don’t really trust the Phillies to improve on both sides of the baseball and think that they don’t have enough talent to compete with the other top teams in the league if they were able to.

However, it’s not crazy to think that if Philadelphia makes the necessary moves, it could be a team to watch.

Who the Phillies decide to add is ultimately going to be the biggest question, and there are a couple of guys who make more sense than others. One under-the-radar name The Athletic recently brought up is Brandon Lowe.

Lowe, the free agent from the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been among the best second basemen in baseball offensively over the past couple of seasons.

The Athletic recently suggested that he could be a fit in Philadelphia, predicting a $63 million contract over three seasons.

“Lowe’s power has always been his strong suit, and he continues to post good-to-great batted ball metrics that would support a chance at a third consecutive 30-plus home run season. And like Seiya Suzuki, Lowe also found a hidden defensive gear at 32, going from minus-14 OAA in 2025 to 15 in 2026.

“The problem, however, has been staying healthy enough to put it all together. Lowe’s 150 games played in 2026 are the most for a single-season in his nine-year career, with everything from oblique strains to lower-body issues that have consistently kept him off the field,” The Athletic wrote.

If Lowe ends up getting just a three-year, $63 million contract, it feels safe to say Philadelphia needs to be involved.

Landing him would be one thing, but Lowe also seemingly enjoyed his time in Pennsylvania, saying he’d be willing to return to the Pirates. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are completely different cities, but he could be interested in playing with some other superstars out in Philadelphia and being on a more veteran-led team than Pittsburgh can offer.
