The San Francisco Giants finished near the bottom of the National League standings in 2026, despite an excellent offensive season from Rafael Devers.
San Francisco came into the year with postseason expectations, but the NL West club pretty much fell flat on its face.
Rest assured, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey will look for roster upgrades this offseason to ensure that doesn’t happen twice.
One area of need for the roster is in the starting rotation. As of today, FanGraphs lists the Giants’ top five as Logan Webb, Landen Roupp, Adrian Houser, Anthony Molina, and Matt Wilkinson.
That’s definitley not good enough to contend in the NL West, and might not be suitable for a Wild Card spot.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicts the Giants will target a right-handed veteran who just helped the Tampa Bay Rays make their World Series run.
“The Giants gave Justin Verlander a one-year, $15 million deal two offseasons ago and Tyler Mahle a one-year, $10 million deal last winter.
“With Robbie Ray’s money also off the books, baseball operations president Buster Posey could target [Nick] Martinez as someone who could not only improve his rotation but also help build a winning culture,” Kelly wrote.
Rays ace Drew Rasmussen called Martinez “the best teammate ever” in July, high praise for the 36-year-old.

Plus, Martinez went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA and 2.9 bWAR in 31 starts with Tampa Bay.
He doesn’t rack up strikeouts but also has tremendous command, walking just 3.6% of opponents this past season.
Depending on what else the Giants do this offseason, Kelly’s two-year, $36 million contract prediction for Martinez could be very worth it for San Francisco if he can be their No. 2 or No. 3 starter.
