The New York Jets are entering their Week 9 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs with some major uncertainty about one of their most important players, Garrett Wilson.

He landed in concussion protocol following Week 8, and after not practicing on Wednesday, his status update for Thursday also revealed that he wasn’t at practice.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that Wilson wasn’t at practice Thursday. This update doesn’t bode well for his odds of playing in Week 9, as he’s running out of time to clear concussion protocol.

Garrett Wilson is not at Jets practice; Week 9 status is very much in doubt

“Jets practice: No sign of Garrett Wilson (concussion) and Harrison Phillips (ankle) during stretching,” Cimini reports. “Breece Hall and David Bailey are practicing.”

While the news about rookie edge rusher David Bailey and star running back Breece Hall is encouraging, the Wilson news is not.

Clearing concussion protocol in one week is tricky, and with Wilson not being at practice on Wednesday or Thursday, there is a real chance he’s ruled out for Week 9 against a very challenging Chiefs defense.

Geno Smith might be without his No. 1 wide receiver this week, as there seems to be a very real chance Wilson’s concussion keeps him out for a week.

Omar Cooper Jr. and Adonai Mitchell will be expected to step into larger roles, with Isiah Williams also factoring into the offense a bit. Kenyon Sadiq and Mason Taylor also should see some work this week as well.

Wilson might not miss time, and he could, in theory, clear protocol in time to suit up in Week 9. But the odds of that are slim with this Thursday update from Cimini, as Wilson has yet to practice ahead of the Jets’ Week 9 matchup against the Chiefs.
