San Francisco 49ers fans should expect the team to scour the NFL trade deadline market this season in search of more help in pursuit of a Super Bowl run.
After adding DeForest Buckner in a big trade with the Indianapolis Colts, they could double-dip and make another trade with the Colts this season. But a recent rumor pointed towards someone totally unexpected: Colts’ running back Jonathan Taylor.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk shared a wild rumor that some in league circles are wondering if the 49ers will make a big splash and land Taylor in a stunning trade. This, simply put, would make zero sense for the 49ers.
49ers trade rumor reveals Jonathan Taylor as possible target
“Chris Simms mentioned on Thursday’s PFT Live that some in league circles are wondering whether the 49ers could make a play for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor,” Florio writes.
This would be a stunning trade for the 49ers to make for so many reasons. One of which is the massive price tag it’d take to land Taylor, likely well north of a second-round pick, and close to what they spent on Christian McCaffrey back in 2022.
While McCaffrey might not be with the team long-term, as he’s getting older and has dealt with injury issues in years past, trading for Taylor now wouldn’t make sense.

Why would the 49ers trade for a second star running back? Those picks would be a lot more useful if they were spent to acquire a wide receiver or more defensive help.
Adding Taylor would easily make for the best RB duo in the league, but it would be unnecessary, as both Taylor and McCaffrey are bell-cow backs. Not to mention there is optimism about Kaelon Black.
This rumor from Florio makes absolutely no sense. There is no scenario in which adding Taylor would help the 49ers enough to justify the cost, unless McCaffrey were to be ruled out for the remainder of the year.
This is one of those trade rumors that will be forgotten about in due time, as there is effectively no chance the 49ers land Taylor. It’s purely speculation, and it’s the kind that makes zero sense.
