Jazz Chisholm is coming off the worst season of his MLB career. He has spent the last couple of seasons with the New York Yankees, and his time in the Bronx has been an up-and-down roller coaster.
Chisholm is set to hit the free-agent market, and it is just a matter of where he wants to go. He has made it clear that he wants to stay in the Bronx.
“Chisholm, an All-Star for the second time in 2025, endured a down year at the plate and struggled both offensively and defensively in four appearances in the playoffs. Manager Aaron Boone left Chisholm out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for two postseason games, including their season-ending loss on Wednesday. The fans at Yankee Stadium booed Chisholm after he fouled out to first base as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nevertheless, Chisholm would rather continue his career with the Yankees than exit in free agency,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Connor Byrne wrote.
There are some rumblings that Chisholm and the Yankees will likely part ways after this season.
“As the Yankees look to retool their roster for the 2027 season, there’s a massive hole they will need to fill. Second base, manned by Jazz Chisholm Jr. for the last two seasons, will explore free agency and it’s likely he will not return to the Bronx,” SNY’s Phillip Martinez wrote.
This means Chisholm could be looking for a new team. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa believes he could land with the San Diego Padres.
“In what was his worst season as a hitter since his rookie year in 2021, Chisholm was still a league-average bat in 2026, and his top-shelf defense and baserunning still landed him at 3.5 WAR. Chisholm is a style-over-substance player who is not for everyone, but his second base defense and near-MLB-best baserunning skills give him a very high floor. He’s a reasonable bet for 20-ish home runs with the potential to go 30-30,” Axisa wrote.
This would be a good pickup for San Diego, as Chisholm could fit right in alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. and the rest of the roster. He still brings plenty to the table offensively and has already won a Silver Slugger award in his career.
Chisholm played under a $10.2 million contract with the Yankees. San Diego is looking to make a deep postseason run, and adding a productive bat with speed would certainly help.
