Wizards fans’ city-wide nightmare has finally ended; AJ Dybantsa will finally — mercifully — make his regular-season debut.
The 19-year old came to the nation’s capital surrounded by fanfare, having been anointed to lead the franchise back from the graveyard after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2026 Draft.
While newcomers like Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson, Yaxel Lendeborg and Mikel Brown Jr. have all gotten a chance to shine in their new colors, Dybantsa has had to bide his time. He was cut down by a left sprained ankle at the end of the preseason. After sitting out Washington’s first four games, he’ll finally get a chance to impress for his employers when they take on the Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
With that, here’s a look at what he could bring to the Wizards in the present and future.
What Wizards fans can expect out of AJ Dybantsa in NBA debut
Dybantsa is an accomplished scorer who is at his best when he’s gallivanting to the rim. The BYU product has tended to find the basket at all three levels of the floor. Blessed with impressive athleticism and lateral quickness, Dybantsa should be a welcome addition on a Wizards roster that lacks in shot creators.
He’ll likely step into more of an off-ball role coming into Brian Keefe’s setup, ceding touches to the likes of Trae Young and Anthony Davis out the gate. But don’t be fooled; Dybantsa should get the reins of the offense before long — his scoring chops, playmaking potential and motor will make him too difficult to ignore.
Defensively, Dybantsa has his detractors. He could struggle with engagement in the Cougars’ backline, surrendering easy cuts off the ball. While his physical gifts are enticing, Dybantsa will need to prioritize keeping his hands and mind active to reach his fullest potential on that end of the floor.
But make no mistake about it; Dybantsa is a Grade-A prospect. It would be folly to expect him to find his rhythm in his opening few games. But once he gets his feed underneath him, he should shine.
