For the sixth time since 2000, the USMNT and Mexico will face off in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final, squaring up at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday.
The Americans arrive after edging Guatemala 2-1 in a nervy semifinal, while Mexico blanked Honduras 1-0 in a bruising contest, setting up another classic clash between the region’s heavyweights. Both sides have plenty at stake: the US is chasing an eighth Gold Cup crown, while Mexico can claim a record-extending 10th title.
For the USMNT, Sunday offers Mauricio Pochettino a shot at his first international silverware, with his side showing resilience after a rocky pre-tournament run of four consecutive defeats. They’ve been clinical when leading at halftime, winning all nine matches in which they’ve gone into the break level or ahead, including four times in this Gold Cup. However, Houston has historically been an uneasy venue for the Americans, with just one prior victory there.
Mexico, meanwhile, have been a defensive fortress under Javier Aguirre, keeping four straight clean sheets at the tournament and conceding fewer shots on target than any other side. El Tri have been lethal after halftime, scoring seven of their eight goals in the second half, and are eyeing back-to-back Gold Cup final wins over the US in Houston, just like they did in 2011. Aguirre could become the first Mexican coach to lift multiple Gold Cups if his disciplined side prevails.
