Given how average the New York Mets were offensively a season ago, it feels safe to say something has to give regarding adding a player or two this offseason.
The Mets seem set in the outfield right now, led by Juan Soto, A.J. Ewing, and Carson Benge, but they could also decide to ignore certain positions and focus on fielding the best possible lineup.
In that scenario, targeting a couple of offensive players this offseason could be a wise move. Two guys in particular who fit that bill are Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ. Bleacher Report recently suggested both could interest the Mets, even with the existing outfield looking set.
“The Mets appear to have their present and future outfield in place with Juan Soto and 2026 rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing, but designated hitter is a potential area to upgrade. The DH spot produced a .213/.310/.378 line this past season, and with their limitless budget, a run at signing Suzuki to fill that hole is not out of the question,” Joel Reuter wrote.
Soto is one of the best players in baseball, Benge has a real chance to be a superstar, and Ewing looks like a guy the Mets can count on for a long time.
All three of those guys will be in the lineup every day, or should be, but that doesn’t mean bringing in a guy like Suzuki or Happ has to change that.
The only question for the Mets is whether they’re willing to spend money on those guys, since they could be expensive given the lack of talent.
