The Kentucky Wildcats football program is putting together their Cinderella story after knocking off another ranked opponent. They won another game in overtime 35-34 to knock off the 10th-ranked LSU Tigers.
This is Kentucky’s second ranked win in a loaded SEC conference. With another huge win and back-to-back overtime wins, the Wildcats should get the nod for a ranking. Their only loss was to Alabama, a game where they held a 17-13 lead at halftime.
Despite two missed field goals in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats got crucial stops on defense and got in position for the game-tying field goal that forced overtime.
Last week against South Carolina, the Wildcats trailed 17-0 before they rallied back and also won that game in overtime, 35-34. Similar to when they played against LSU, when Kentucky scored a touchdown, they went for two and converted to stun the Gamecocks at home.
During the SEC media day, Will Stein was asked why he thought he could win in Kentucky, and he said, “I think it’s because of me, to be honest. I think I know what it takes. I have seen it at the highest levels. I know what it takes to recruit at this level.”
He went on to say, “You just have to believe, man. You just got to put the ball down and play. There’s nothing really else to be said.”
The key to success for Kentucky is playing all 60 minutes of the game. They never quit, and it was because of the mentality of first-year head coach Will Stein, “You gotta play to win. I don’t know what else to say.” And winning is what they did.
Kentucky is 5-1, and Stein is off to a stellar start in his first season. They do not face another ranked opponent for the rest of the season, but they may have already placed their bid for a chance at the SEC championship if they can win out.
With the new CFP bracket system, an SEC title guarantees a top 4 spot.
