The Chicago Bears are winning games even without franchise quarterback Caleb Williams healthy and on the field, but that doesn’t mean they want him to be away for long. Williams is the center of this team’s offense, so head coach Ben Johnson and the team want him back when he’s healthy enough to return to play.

On Friday, ahead of the team’s game against rivals the Green Bay Packers, Johnson gave a significant update about Williams and the progress of his injury. In it, he said that they’re taking things one day at a time but have also been increasing his activity load, so things are moving in the right direction.

Ben Johnson reveals Caleb Williams’ injury status

“We got him progressively increasing the amount of running that’s going on, and of course the throwing aspect of it is a big part of his position as well,” Johnson said, according to the Bears Wire. “Our guys have a good plan in place and we’re just going step by step with that right now.”

The Bears won’t have Williams back in time to take on the Packers this Sunday. The quarterback will miss his third consecutive game this week, and backup Tyson Bagent will start. Williams suffered a Grade 2 hamstring injury during the team’s Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He’s officially “week-to-week.” Both Bagent and Case Keenum have pulled off riveting wins in his absence, so the hope for Bears fans is that it will repeat this weekend against the Packers.
