The Boston Red Sox are facing a decision they likely didn’t expect a year ago. With several young players looking for Opening Day roster spots, the organization has decided how quickly to promote its top prospects and whether they’re ready to contribute at the big league level right away.
Infielder Marcelo Mayer is in that mix, as he’s viewed as a key piece to Boston’s future now and in the long-term.
However, he recently admitted he wasn’t satisfied with the way his 2025 season unfolded, the year in which he got his first cup of coffee in the show. Speaking about his performance, Mayer acknowledged that his struggles stayed with him throughout the offseason.
“I didn’t perform the way that I want to. I didn’t perform the way that I know I can,” Mayer said, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. “Entering the offseason I was [ticked] because that’s the season I put out to the world. It was a long offseason, a lot of nights thinking about it.”
Despite the frustration, Mayer made it clear he never doubted his overall ability.
“I have peace in my mind that I know I’m really good at baseball, but it [ticked] me off that I didn’t play that way,” Mayer continued. “It’s not about there being doubt that I’m good or not, or that I know I can hang. I know myself. I know who I am as a player. And I know I’m really good when I step onto the field.”
Mayer added that constantly adjusting his swing made it tough for him to ever feel comfortable during the season, something he thinks contributed to his struggles.
