While the Pittsburgh Pirates might not be World Series contenders this season, their postseason odds are not that bad thanks to Paul Skenes and the offseason additions they’ve made.
But, entering 2026, the biggest storyline isn’t a trade or free agent, but the top prospect in all of baseball, Konnor Griffin, and how he’s set to make his MLB debut. The 19-year-old is ascending quickly and could make the Opening Day roster.
While exciting, MLB.com’s Travis Sawchik revealed that history is not on Griffin’s side. He will have to beat the odds and be one of a few teenagers who made their debut and turned in good debut seasons.
Konnor Griffin faces long odds to begin MLB career as teenager
“Over the past 40 years, there have been 18 position players to debut as teenagers,” Sawchik writes, “… The average debut year OPS+ of these rare teenagers is 75, meaning they are 25% below MLB-average offensive performance when adjusted for ballpark and run-scoring environments.”
While the list of teenagers in their debut season is small, the sample size doesn’t bode well for Griffin. The majority are not better than league average at the plate, which isn’t too much of a surprise considering how hard baseball is for even the best players in their primes.
Sawchik does share that the OPS+ does rise to 98 if the sample size is limited to those teenagers who had at least 200 plate appearances in their debut season.

And for the four players who had 400 plate appearances as a teenager in the Majors, their OPS+ skyrockets to 118, thanks. Those players include Juan Soto, Bryce Harper, Ken Griffey Jr., and Edgar Renteria.
Griffin has shown plenty of reason to have optimism if he’s in the Major Leagues as a teenager. But the majority of history isn’t on his side.
He could be more like Soto, Harper, and Griffey, or he could get off to a slow start like the majority of teenage prospects do.
There might not be a more interesting player this 2026 MLB season than Griffin. He could turn into a superstar in the Majors if all goes well, and instantly catapult the Pirates into postseason contention.
