The Detroit Lions are trading veteran running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, per Ian Rapoport.
Montgomery was the 1B in the Lions’ backfield to 1A Jahmyr Gibbs. The tandem was affectionately known as “Sonic and Knuckles”, with Gibbs as the speedy Sonic and Montgomery as the more bruising back.
The veteran running back will join his third team after beginning his NFL career with the Chicago Bears. He had been with the Lions for three years and now gets a chance to start with the Texans.
Here is more on the Lions trading Montgomery to the Texans.

David Montgomery trade details
Lions:
- Fourth-round pick
- Seventh-round pick
- OL Juice Scruggs
Texans:
Montgomery will get the chance to be the starting running back in Houston. The Texans were surprisingly without Mixon for the entire 2025 season and instead turned to a combination of Nick Chubb and Woody Marks. Montgomery will likely be the best back that Houston has, and at worst would be in a committee with the second-year Marks.
