David Montgomery apparently thought the trade rumors were funny.
On Sunday morning, he posted on X to question ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler’s report that Montgomery “wants out” of Detroit.
On Monday morning, Montgomery was traded from the Lions to the Houston Texans.
Life comes at you fast.
X actually put a community note on the original post saying that Montgomery had denied it:
Damn, Dmo told you that ? https://t.co/ttg4DY6H99

Apparently, whoever told Fowler a deal might be coming knew exactly what they were talking about.
The Lions are looking at the potential of extending Jahmyr Gibbs this offseason. Keeping Monty around simply didn’t make much sense anymore.
Maybe Fowler’s wording wasn’t perfect. Maybe Montgomery didn’t ask for a trade or “want out.”
Regardless, he’s now out.
The Texans get a 28-year old veteran RB to pair with youngster Woody Marks in a backfield that should take some pressure off quarterback C.J. Stroud.
It will be interesting to hear what Montgomery has to say when he’s introduced as a Texan. Did he want out or not? And how does he feel now that he’s actually the member of a new team?
For Montgomery to hit the ground running in Houston, it’ll be important to answer those questions well.
