  • Chelsea criticized for signing ‘overhyped player’ and getting ‘conned again’

Chelsea’s summer shopping spree has stirred up the fanbase once again — and not in a good way.

The latest name to arrive at Stamford Bridge is Joao Pedro, but instead of celebration, the news was met with confusion and criticism online.

The Brazilian forward joined Chelsea from Brighton in a deal worth around £60 million ($81.5m), signing a long-term deal through 2033.

It’s the kind of bold move Blues fans have grown used to under the club’s new ownership. But many think this one may have missed the goal entirely.

On social media, fans didn’t hold back. One user on X (@Ben__LFC__) wrote, “£12m per non-penalty goal last season, madness.” Another added (@BamcheUtd), “Brighton conned Chelsea again.”

And let’s be honest — it’s not the first time Chelsea have paid top dollar for talent from the south coast that didn’t quite shine.

From Marc Cucurella to Moises Caicedo, the spending has been big, but the returns have been, let’s say, patchy.

Joao Pedro now joins that list of high-priced imports, and while his stats at Brighton weren’t bad — 30 goals in 70 appearances — some wonder if Chelsea are paying for potential, not proven product.

Is Joao Pedro really an upgrade for Chelsea?

The jury’s still out. Joao Pedro brings a different skill set compared to Chelsea’s current attacking options. He’s not your typical No. 9. Instead, he likes to drop deep, connect with midfield, and set others up. Think more Firmino than Drogba.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca clearly sees something special in him. “Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,” Pedro said after signing.

“When you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing — win.” Nice words, but the pressure is real.

Despite all the noise, the forward could get a chance to silence critics quickly. He’s expected to debut in the Club World Cup clash against Palmeiras. A strong showing there could change the mood fast.

For now, fans are split — some hoping he unlocks Chelsea’s attack, others worried they’ve fallen for the hype again.
