Seiya Suzuki is letting his play do the talking as contract discussions continue with the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs outfielder recently addressed his mindset regarding his future in Chicago, offering a short but telling response that shows his team-first approach and commitment to playing as well as he can.
“I want to work hard and perform well, and hopefully they say yes,” he said, per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun Times.
Since arriving from Japan, he has had some decent moments, though his defensive issues are tough to ignore. When Suzuki is at his best offensively, he’s shown he can swing it at a high level against the best of the best.
Suzuki has posted an OPS+ of 130 and above over the past three seasons and is coming off a campaign in which he hit 32 home runs. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and should have a decent market.
It doesn’t sound like Suzuki will worry too much about getting a deal from the Cubs, but he’d certainly take one if there’s a chance to get it.
From the Cubs’ standpoint, Suzuki fits what they’re looking to do offensively and they should offer him a deal that makes sense for both sides when the time comes.
