It was a wild Wednesday in New Hampshire as No. 3 Brewster Academy flirted with disaster in a narrow 71-70 win over the New Hampton School.

Brewster Academy entered the game with just two losses to the two teams ranked ahead of them in the latest edition of The Sporting News High School Basketball Top 25. The Bobcats lost to the No. 2 AZ Compass Prep [Chandler, AZ] Dragons, 67-55, back on December 13 and didn’t lose again until January 11 in a 60-47 setback to the nation’s No.1 SPIRE Academy [Geneva, OH].

But New Hampton – located about 40 miles and an hour from Brewster Academy’s campus – gave the national powerhouse a scare despite their unheraled status with Brewster eventually surviving in a one-point win.

It wasn’t the night’s only surprising result.

In the only other game involving a Top 25 team in action, the No. 18 St. John Bosco Braves found themselves on the short end of a 72-68 result against Orange Lutheran. Leading 69-66 with 10.6 seconds to play, the Braves were forced to foul sending the Lancers to the charity stripe. The first attempt bounced around before rolling off, but the second one was nothing but net to put Orange Lutheran up by four.

St. John Bosco scored on a putback with 2.3 seconds to play, but it would prove to be too little too late to complete the rally.

The result harkened back to football season when the Orange Lutheran eleven stunned St. John Bosco in a 20-19 upset in California’s Southern Section playoffs to end the Braves’ national title hopes.
