The United States is currently dealing with Winter Storm Fern. The storm is dumping snow in the Northeast while bringing frigid conditions and ice to the south.

Sports can be an outlet for fans’ life stressors, but sometimes conditions in a host city are so bad that it is unsafe for fans to travel to the game. When that happens, the event is usually postponed or cancelled with public safety in mind.

Fern hit most of the eastern part of the United States overnight Saturday into Sunday, but continues to keep temperatures low, causing ample snow or ice impacting travel. This has led some major sports leagues to make major decisions, including delaying or postponing games on Sunday.

The Sporting News will provide the latest updates for the sports and teams affected by the storm.

The Dallas Mavericks were scheduled to take on the Milwaukee Bucks at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday. That game will be postponed.

As of 1:25 p.m. ET, the Mavericks were still awaiting takeoff in Dallas, which made it seem like postponement was a real possibility.

The Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies were scheduled to play on Sunday, but the game was postponed due to weather conditions.

NHL

There are six games currently on the NHL schedule for Sunday. So far, none of them have been postponed or delayed.

Monday’s game between the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets has been postponed due to the conditions in Columbus, Ohio.

College basketball

Three men’s basketball games were postponed. Saint Francis vs. New Haven in Connecticut, Purdue Fort Wayne vs. IU Indianapolis in Indiana and Southern Illinois vs. Evansville in Indiana were all cancelled because of the weather. There were only seven Division 1 men’s college basketball games scheduled for Sunday.

Only one women’s basketball game has been postponed so far. Northeastern vs. Monmouth in New Jersey was postponed.

NFL

The NFL will hold the AFC and NFC championships on Sunday. The AFC championship is in Denver, and will have cold conditions, though nothing is expected to warrant a postponement. The NFC championship will be held in Seattle, which is expected to be chilly, but not impacted by snow or ice.
