The New York Yankees have a great duo in the back of their bullpen with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. However, they could still be in the market for relievers at the deadline.
The Yankees could benefit from adding some middle relievers or another arm to use in leverage situations. Having another elite arm would allow them to start putting the game away in the seventh inning. FanSided’s Lucas Babits-Feinerman suggested the Yankees trade for Danny Coulombe of the Minnesota Twins.
“Coulombe is equally effective against both lefties and righties,” wrote Babits-Feinerman. “His pitch mix includes a four-seamer, sinker, cutter, and sweeper, but he tops out at 90.3 MPH, which would be second slowest in the Yanks bullpen ahead of only Tim Hill. He gets good movement on his cutter, which is his most common pitch, and has thrown a sweeper 66 times this season, and opposing hitters have yet to get a hit (.104 xBA). Coulombe’s 24:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio is elite, and he’s a groundball pitcher with a 40% groundball rate this year and a 49.9% career average.”
Coulombe has been phenomenal this season. He has a 0.82 ERA in 28 games and has walked just five batters all season. The Yankees could use him as their seventh-inning man with Weaver and Williams in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Yankees’ bullpen already has a top 10 ERA in baseball. However, there is no downside to having an even more dominant bullpen when the postseason rolls around.

The Twins are not destined to be sellers just yet. They are within striking distance of a wild card spot, entering play on Saturday. However, if they struggle between now and the July 31 trade deadline, they could look to part ways with Coulombe. He will be a free agent after the season.
