  • Man City tracking Portuguese star despite significant Man United interest

The summer transfer window has seen several prominent signings across leagues, with more to come.

Manchester City have already made four major signings ahead of the ongoing Club World Cup. While it appears Pep Guardiola’s side have been prepping for a successful run in the upcoming season, many have suggested that the English club need to further bolster their stance in front of the goal.

Earlier, Guardiola stated that he would not be looking to make changes to the existing goalkeepers this summer. However, uncertainties over first-choice shot-stopper Ederson’s future at the Etihad have been persisting.

Ederson has been underwhelming in the 2024/25 season with several errors on the pitch, along with sustaining multiple injuries, and missing 10 matches for the club. He contributed to 12 clean sheets and conceded 48 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Even though he has been included in Man City’s squad for the Club World Cup, doubts over his future at the club still prevail, with the Brazilian star reportedly receiving offers from Saudi Pro League clubs as well.

Now, Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa has told his inner circle that he wants to move abroad and take on a new challenge in a different league, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.

The aforementioned report stated that Costa being open to a move away from Porto has put the 25-year-old on Man City’s transfer target list as their archrivals, Man United, are also interested in potentially acquiring his signature.

How can Man City potentially sign Porto’s Diogo Costa?

Costa has recently turned heads with his efforts in front of the goal that helped Portugal bag a 5-3 on penalties win against Spain in the Nations League final.

The Porto academy graduate’s current contract is valid until the summer of 2027, and the Portuguese club are not expected to part ways with one of their own talents without making a profit.

Porto have set a reported release clause of €75 million (£64m/$87m) release clause for Costa. However, reports have suggested that they can consider the transfer for €60 million (£51m/$69m).

While Costa will be a great potential replacement for Ederson, it remains to be seen if Man City will consider making an offer to Porto for him after the Club World Cup.

Costa contributed to 19 clean sheets while conceding 45 goals in 43 appearances for Porto last season.
