Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Buffalo Bills in the regular season, and once again, it was Sean McDermott’s team who emerged victorious, this time 28-21.

It follows an odd pattern of the Bills beating the Chiefs in the regular season, only for the two teams to meet again in the playoffs, and the Chiefs end Buffalo’s season. Something it has done the past four times meeting the Bills in the playoffs.

And when asked about another potential rematch in the playoffs with Buffalo, Patrick Mahomes had quite the eye-opening response.

“We got to get there first, “Mahomes said. “A lot of good teams in our division playing really good football, and we’re down there in third place right now, so we got to get back and get ourselves right.”

Patrick isn’t wrong. At 5-4 and currently out of the playoff picture, there is no use talking about hypotheticals. The Chiefs have to make the postseason first before any thoughts of a Bills rematch can take place.

Could Chiefs miss the playoffs?

As absolutely insane as that sounds, right now, you would have to say yes.

Not in the playoffs if the tournament started today, sitting at 5-4 with two tough games against the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts up next. If things go south —and I mean really south —the Chiefs could be 5-6 with the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

Granted, that is the worst-case scenario, and the Chiefs could easily win their next two and everything will be right in the world again.

But right now, the Chiefs could miss the postseason. Do I think they will? Absolutely not, but they haven’t given themselves much wiggle room with eight games left in the season.

Another installment of the Chiefs/Bills rivalry in the playoffs would be superb, but as Mahomes stated, the Chiefs have to get there first.
