Auburn’s firing of Hugh Freeze in his three season sets up another high-profile coaching search on The Plains. Freeze went 15-19 overall, and walks with the school owing him roughly $15.8 million in buyout.

Several names have quickly surfaced as potential replacements. Here are five names to watch in the process.

Jon Sumrall, Tulane

Sumrall has emerged as one of the top Group of Six coaches in the nation, posting a 38-10 career record across stints at Troy and Tulane. The former Kentucky linebacker has deep roots in the Southeast recruiting scene and isn’t afraid to use the transfer portal. He’s won two conference titles at Troy. He’s a logical SEC candidate with strong ties to the south.

Brent Key, Georgia Tech

Key has built Georgia Tech into a disciplined, top ACC team and is earning national attention. A Tech alum and respected offensive line developer, he’s turned the Yellow Jackets around quickly since replacing Geoff Collins in 2022. Auburn values toughness and trench play, and Key’s background could translate well.

Kenny Dillingham

Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State

At 35, Dillingham guided his alma mater to last year’s College Football Playoff and first-ever Big 12 title. He’s known for developing quarterbacks like Bo Nix and Jordan Travis, Dillingham’s offensive creativity and energy would bring Auburn into the next generation of play-calling. Whether he would leave Tempe, however, is uncertain.

James Franklin, former Penn State coach

Franklin’s name continues to circulate after his exit from Penn State. He won consistently in the Big Ten and previously built Vanderbilt into a winner. His SEC experience and recruiting strength makes him a candidate despite criticism over his record in big games.

Jimbo Fisher, former Texas A&M coach

Fisher recently said he wants back in coaching and another SEC stop might happen. The veteran coach with a national championship and 128 FBS wins could appeal to Tigers desire for a proven winner. Fisher is currently an ACC Network analyst, but would give up TV work for the sidelines. If Auburn prioritizes experience, Fisher fits the bill.
