How many brothers does Giannis have?

Giannis Antetokounmpo has four brothers. And all four of them have also been involved in sports. In fact, two of them are teammates of his on the Milwaukee Bucks. Here’s a deeper look at all of his siblings.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Thanasis Antetokounmpo was born in 1992. He was the 51st overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. While Giannis is known as “The Greek Freak,” Thanasis has been called “The Greek Streak” since he is thinner and faster than his older brother.

Antetokounmpo has played for the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks. Entering the 2025 season, he had played in 198 career games and had averaged 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Alex Antetokounmpo

Alex is the youngest of the Antetokounmpo brothers, born in 2001. After graduating from high school in Wisconsin, he chose to play internationally rather than play in college. On Oct. 13, 2025, Alex signed a two-way contract with Milwaukee. This marked the first time in NBA history that three brothers were members of the same team.

Kostas Antetokounmpo

Kostas was the first of the Antetokounmpo brothers to play college basketball. He played for the Dayton Flyers from 2017-2018. Kostas was then drafted to the Philadelphia 76ers with the 60th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He played in only two games for Dallas at the NBA level, spending most of his time in the G-League.

Kostas was waived and then claimed by the Los Angeles Lakers. Over two seasons with them, he played in 20 total games. Since then, he has gone back to playing basketball overseas. Most recently, Antetokounmpo signed a two-year contract with Olympiacos in Greece.

Giannis Antetokounmpo mother: Veronica Antetokounmpo

The Antetokounmpo family’s involvement in sports didn’t start with the brothers. Their mother Veronica was a former high jumper. She was born in Nigeria and spoke Igbo, one of the four official Nigerian languages. When the head coach of the Greek semi-pro team wanted to recruit Giannis, he said he convinced his parents by saying that he could get them jobs that paid 800 euros a month.  Veronica continues to support her sons in their athletic endeavors.

Giannis Antetokounmpo father: Charles Antetokounmpo

Charles Antetokounmpo was a professional soccer player. He wanted his sons to all play soccer, given how big the sport is in Nigeria. In the end, he only was able to convince Francis, with the other brothers instead opting for basketball.

Charles passed in 2017 from a heart attack. He was only 54 years old. Giannis said afterwards that the family was getting through their grief together. “We loved our dad. My mom loved her husband. But at the end of the day, I think, he did what he was supposed to do in this world. He had five kids and raised us right. That’s the most important thing. I hope one day when I leave this world too that I can leave to my kids the impact that my dad is leaving now.”

Giannis and his family began the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation in 2022 to help refugees, immigrants, youth, widows and athletes.

Giannis Antetokounmpo nationality

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a mix of Greek and Nigerian nationalities. His parents were Nigerian immigrants who moved to Greece, where Antetokounmpo was born and raised.

Where is Giannis Antetokounmpo from?

Giannis Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece on Dec. 6, 1994. His citizenship was always a topic of conversation. Greek nationality law follows jus sanguinis, which means you’re a citizen if your parents were citizens, and it is determined by blood. Antetokounmpo’s parents are both Nigerian, but he was born in Greece, so he was neither a Greek nor a Nigerian citizen. Antetokounmpo wasn’t granted his Greek citizenship until 2013, and only then so that he could attend the NBA Draft, and start his pro basketball career.
