The New York Jets are 0-7 and haven’t been able to get much going offensively the last few weeks. With losses to the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers, both featuring paltry offensive performances, the Jets have a quarterback problem.
The Jets’ defense held both the Broncos and Panthers to 13 points, but against the Broncos, Fields and the offense had -10 net passing yards, and against the Panthers, the offense couldn’t put together any touchdown drives.
For Jets’ owner Woody Johnson, that’s a problem that he’s well aware of. At the NFL meetings, as Rich Cimini of ESPN shared, Johnson made it clear how he feels about the team’s quarterback issues, clearly taking a shot at Justin Fields.
Jets’ Woody Johnson takes shot at Justin Fields
Johnson, while he still has faith in Aaron Glenn, seemingly doesn’t feel the same about Fields. He said the Jets could begin to win, “if only we can just complete a pass.”
Woody Johnson, speaking to reporters at the NFL meetings in NYC, says he has faith and confidence in Aaron Glenn that he can turn it around.
Johnson says they can start winning “if we can just complete a pass.” He wouldn’t weigh in on Fielde vs Taylor, but it’s clear where this…

While Johnson wouldn’t comment on the team’s ongoing quarterback debate, on whether Fields or Tyrod Taylor would start in Week 8, his comments point towards a preference for Taylor.
So far this season, Fields has 845 passing yards and four touchdowns on 135 attempts. But those numbers are much better than he’s looked the last two weeks.
He went 9/17 against the Broncos for 45 yards, losing 55 yards on sacks. Then, against the Panthers, before being benched, he went 6/12 for 46 yards. He scored no touchdowns in both games and held the team back in very winnable games.

Taylor, meanwhile, has 379 passing yards and three touchdowns along with three interceptions in his three games of playing time. But he’s started on the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and came in as relief for Fields against the Panthers.
While he turned the ball over more than Fields, the Jets offense was able to move the ball much more consistently without Fields. This difference in performance is something that Johnson has seemingly taken note of, based on his comment about completing passes.
It’s not a direct shot at Fields, but after the last two weeks, it’s hard to ignore that Johnson’s comments are anything but a criticism of Fields after his bad back-to-back performances.
The Jets could be making a quarterback change this week, though the official decision isn’t final. For now, Taylor is trending towards being the starter, especially in the wake of this comment from the team’s owner.
