The Detroit Lions took the field for Monday Night Football in Week 7 looking quite sharp.

The Lions donned their all-black uniforms to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There’s a good reason they wear these, too.

Why are the Detroit Lions wearing black uniforms?

The Detroit Lions call their black uniforms “Motor City Muscle.”

It’s a nod to Detroit’s working-class energy.

The Lions wore uniforms somewhat like these in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and these are a modern reimagining of those.

They didn’t come back until the Lions won the NFC North a couple seasons ago. The team didn’t want to add these to the mix unless a division title had been won.

The Lions first wore black uniforms in 1948.

This version has a sweet helmet. It’s a chrome blue look, and the lion on the blue helmet is black.

The Lions generally wear white, gray or their blue as the majority color of their uniform.

But when they break out the Motor City Muscle, it’s a whole new look.
