North America’s newly crowned Continental Cup Champion Alex Spellman running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and dancing around the famous Rocky statue with the trophy aloft is an image I hope everyone is now amusingly picturing.
It may not have been quite how The Jackal celebrated – in fact, I’m certain it wasn’t. But he did indeed claim the Championship Darts Circuit honours, defeating David Cameron 8-5 in the final. For the second time in his impressive tungsten career, 36-year-old Spellman lifted the prestigious title, three years after his initial success in New York.

The cream of North America’s arrow-smiths had congregated at the Columbia Social Club to see which of the sixteen hopefuls would be left standing tall. The North Carolina man began well, turning a strong start into a 5-3 victory over Nick Linberg. What could have easily been the final came earlier than expected – a quarter-final clash with the decorated Leonard Gates. After losing the opening three legs to the Texan, the task looked grim. By the time Spellman made an impression on the contest, the Soulger was one away, leading 5-2. But in darts, it ain’t over until it’s over – and Spellman raced through the proverbial Gates, reeling off four on the bounce to pip his compatriot to the line.
Alex probably fancied an easier ride after that journey from hell. Instead, he faced another of North America’s big dogs, Adam Sevada. If you’re going to win these big titles, you have to beat the best – and that meant defeating the top seed, which he did 7-5 to reach the final.
Awaiting him was Canada’s David Cameron, giving the tournament an accurate reflection of its name – the Continental Championship. Once again, Spellman decided to do things the hard way, this time trying to recover from a 5-1 deficit to triumph. OK, so it wasn’t by design, but nonetheless, the Boone-born chucker showed his powers of recovery, rattling off seven unanswered legs to stun Cameron and claim the crown.
The win means The Jackal will not only be heading to Ally Pally in December but will also bag a Grand Slam of Darts spot next month. Congratulations to him – and if you ever struggle to work out finishes, I suggest watching his educational videos on the subject. After all, he quite clearly knows his stuff.
