Arsenal face a huge Premier League test on September 28 as the Gunners head to Newcastle United this weekend.

Mikel Arteta is playing catch-up to Liverpool in the title race on the back of an August defeat at Anfield and a scrappy 1-1 home draw with Manchester City last weekend.

His side edged into the Carabao Cup fourth round in midweek with a 2-0 away win at Port Vale, as Newcastle cruised past Bradford City on Tyneside.

The Magpies have won just one league game in 2025/26 but Eddie Howe has a strong home record against Arteta in recent clashes.

Newcastle have won their past two Premier League matches at St. James’ Park against Arsenal with Arteta not winning away against Howe in any competition since 2023.

Newcastle United vs. Arsenal lineups: Predicted starting XI, team news, injury latest

Both managers will make sweeping changes after resting key stars against lower-league opposition in the Carabao Cup.

Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento will rotate back in at full-back with regular midfield trio Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes reunited.

Nick Woltemade came off the bench late on against Bradford and the Germany international will lead the attack in his biggest game since joining the club last month.

Antony Gordon will make his league comeback following suspension but Fabian Schar, Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa remain out.

Newcastle predicted starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Botman, Burn, Livramento — Joelinton, Tonali, Guimaraes — Elanga, Woltemade, Gordon

Injured: Ramsey (ankle), Wissa (knee), Schar (head)
Suspended: None

Bukayo Saka was replaced after an hour at Port Vale as Arteta looks to ease him back into action following a hamstring injury, and the England winger looks certain to make his first league start for a month.

Captain Martin Odegaard remains a doubt due to a persistent shoulder injury, and Arteta may start him on the bench to protect against the power in Newcastle’s midfield.

Noni Madueke has been ruled out until November with a knee injury with long-term absentees Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus still on the sidelines.

Eberechi Eze could be handed a starting role after opening his account at Port Vale, with the 27-year-old pushed into a more advanced position.

Arsenal predicted starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori — Merino, Zubimendi, Rice — Saka, Gyokeres, Eze

Injured: Jesus (knee), Havertz (knee), Madueke (knee), Hincapie (groin), Odegaard (shoulder, doubt)
Suspended: None
