When teams prepare for their matchup against their opponent, they make sure that they review film, execute their game plan in practice, and that their guys are healthy. Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire takes an extra step to get his players in the right mindset before gameday.
McGuire was interviewed on ‘The Triple Option’ podcast hosted by Rob Stone, Urban Meyer, and Mark Ingram II. His appearance comes after the Red Raiders defeated the Utah Utes 34-10 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
In the interview, McGuire revealed that he asked Meyer for advice before Saturday’s game. “I asked coach (Meyer), and he said his teams played best when they were p— off. And so, man, I p—ed our guys off on Saturday,” McGuire said

Later in the interview, Meyer asked McGuire how he prepares his players’ mindset during a game week. McGuire answered by saying that the team has a 1 and 0 mentality going into every single week.
“Right now, around the building, we have 1 and 0, and we usually have the logo marked through of who we’re playing, but right now this week, with a bye-week, it’s 1 and 0, and it just says us,” McGuire said.
He also added that he has found success in bulletin board material from the media and showing it to the players to rile them up.
“You know what’s funny is like different teams respond to different things. Coach (Meyer), this team responds to being p—ed off, and it starts with that defensive line. — Those guys really respond to that, and so good to know that we could push that button,” McGuire said.
The motivation tactics seem to be clearly working for McGuire as the Red Raiders are 4-0 for the first time since 2013. This week, they have a bye week and will try to rest up as they go on the road next week to face the Houston Cougars on October 4th.
