After a tense and physical win over the Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham added fuel to the fire with a bold Instagram post.

Cunningham shared a photo of herself with arms wide open and smiling, just hours after being ejected from Tuesday night’s game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

While she didn’t say anything in the post, the timing and her expression said enough, with many fans viewing it as a subtle message following the chaos on the court.

The Fever beat the Sun, 88-71, but the game was overshadowed by multiple heated moments. It started in the second quarter when Cunningham’s teammate, Caitlin Clark, got into a shoving match with Sun guard Jacy Sheldon.

The incident didn’t result in penalties, but tensions didn’t stop there. In the third quarter, Sheldon poked Clark in the eye. Clark responded by pushing Sheldon and Sun veteran Marina Mabrey shoved Clark to the ground. The referees gave technical fouls to Clark and Sun center Tina Charles. Sheldon received a flagrant foul.

Things reached a boiling point with less than a minute left in the game. Sheldon was going in for a shot when Cunningham grabbed her around the neck and dragged her down.

The foul sparked a near-brawl, with players from both teams rushing in. Cunningham, Sheldon and Sun guard Lindsay Allen were all ejected.

Sun head coach Rachid Meziane didn’t hold back in criticizing Cunningham after the game.

“For me, it’s just disrespectful to do that foul when you are winning the game by 17 points,” she said. “Completely stupid.”

Cunningham’s post after the game didn’t include a caption, but many fans saw it as a taunt or an unapologetic response to the drama. Some praised Cunningham for defending Clark, while others called the action “excessive.”

“It was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said. “When the officials don’t get control of the ball game… this is what happens.”

Cunningham, who just joined the Fever this season after a trade from Phoenix, is known for her tough playing style — and now, for her cryptic social media moves.

The Fever and the Sun now have one of the WNBA’s most heated rivalries, and Cunningham is right in the middle of it.
