The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced today that they will be without goaltender Joseph Woll for now as he deals with personal matters.

The 27 year old netminder is coming off a strong year last season with his Leafs squad as he and starter Anthony Stolarz formed one of the most reliable tandems in the league.

Joseph Woll recorded a 27-14-1 record last year and produced a 2.73 goals against average and .909 save percentage with 1 shutout. Woll was heavily relied upon last season as Stolarz dealt with multiple injuries, including one that took him out of playoff availability.

What does this mean for Toronto?

This is not ideal news for the Leafs as they temporarily lose a promising goalie in the rotation as the preseason is underway and regular season hockey is only 2 weeks away. Although, it is very possible Woll returns by opening night.

For the time being they will turn to Stolarz to take on the bulk of the action as their number 1. It will be interesting to see if this development affects contract talks with Stolarz as he and the Leafs continue to work on a new deal. Behind Stolarz, 3rd stringer Dennis Hildeby will likely get a solid opportunity for action in preseason activity.

The Leafs will hope that Woll comes back sooner rather than later as their goaltending strength takes a massive blow without his services. Across his 4 year career in Toronto, Woll has amassed a 48-27-2 record in the regular season and a 6-3-3 record in the postseason.
