Novak Djokovic bid for a record 25th grand slam got off to a rocky start on Sunday evening. The 38-year-old had to work hard for a 6-1, 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over American teen Learner Tien in the first round of 2025 US Open.

The most successful player of the Open Era, with 24 majors, Djokovic has not won a grand slam for nearly two years. His last major came at the 2023 US Open, and the Serb will be hoping to turn back the clock and seal his legacy in tennis’ history books.

While Djokovic has made deep runs at each of the grand slams this year, he has been halted at the semifinals at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Sunday’s US Open clash was Djokovic’s first match since losing to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, and the Serb took time to shake off the rust. In an error-strewn performance, Djokovic seemed to struggle physically, had trouble with a hip issue and even called the trainer on court after the second set to re-apply tape on his toe.

Here is everything you need to know about Novak Djokovic’s appearance at the US Open, including the latest results from the tournament.

When is Novak Djokovic’s next match at US Open 2025?

Novak Djokovic will take on American qualifier Zachary Svajda, ranked 145 in the world, in the second round of the singles tournament. The match is likely to be played on Wednesday.
