Ben Shelton made a strong start to 2025 US Open as he defeated Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round on Sunday.
The road to this year’s US Open has been an interesting one for the 22-year-old, with Shelton winning his maiden Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open.
A man for the big stage, Shelton has reached quarterfinals or better in four of the last 12 grand slams he has competed in. In 2025 alone, he reached the semifinal of the Australian Open and last eight at Wimbledon.
Shelton is aiming to improve on his 2023 run, when he reached the semifinals in front of an electric home crowd. In the second round, the sixth seed takes on the seasoned Pablo Carreno Busta.
