If Alabama fans were expecting an announcement about who will be backing up Ty Simpson this upcoming season, they will have to wait longer.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was not giving any hints as to who he believes will be backing up Simpson to start the season.
“We won’t really get into that as far as who is second. These guys are going to keep competing, and that’s for every position,” DeBoer said via the Tuscaloosa News. “Right now, there’s balance between them in some things we do, the reps. But there is certainly coordination on who is getting those reps, as well.”
All three quarterbacks have done well this fall, especially limiting their mistakes, according to DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Simpson just had better control of the offense than the other two talented quarterbacks.
Earlier this week, CBS college football analyst Rick Neuheisel said that he believed that Simpson didn’t earn the starting role for Alabama, and that it was given to Simpson not because he was better than Austin Mack or Keelon Russell, but because he was loyal to the program.
“I think there’s a number of quarterback situations across the country that they are going to coach around the quarterback a little bit until they know what they have,” he said via the McElroy and Cubic Morning Show. “When you read what Kalen DeBoer said about Ty and he’s deserving this chance because of his loyalty to the program, that isn’t him winning the job. That is him having been there long enough, so he gets the first chance.”
Not only was this a slight against Simpson, but he was suggesting that the other two quarterbacks never got a fair shot at the job.
