Well, baby steps for the Buccaneers on Thursday.

Tampa Bay moves Godwin and Wirfs to 53-man roster

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will carry wide receiver Chris Godwin and left tackle Tristan Wirfs on their 53-man roster to open the season, but fans should not expect either player to suit up anytime soon.

Bucs’ star duo activated from PUP list but still weeks from playing

Both veterans have been sidelined since the start of training camp, each recovering from offseason surgeries. Godwin is still working his way back from a fractured ankle suffered in Week 7 of last year, while Wirfs is rehabbing from arthroscopic knee surgery.

Why the roster move matters

Head coach Todd Bowles explained that the decision to activate them from the physically unable to perform list is about flexibility. Players who begin the regular season on PUP must miss at least four games and cannot practice during that time. By moving Godwin and Wirfs to the active roster, the Buccaneers can get them back on the practice field as soon as doctors clear them.

Still, Bowles would not commit to a firm return date, noting that both players “need to get in football shape” before rejoining game action.

Godwin’s recovery timeline

According to reports, Godwin is not expected to play until October despite progress in his rehab. He is likely to begin practicing in Week 2 but remains several weeks away from being game-ready.

The team has stayed confident in his recovery process. Earlier this spring, Godwin underwent a minor follow-up procedure on his ankle, something sources described as routine. Tampa Bay showed its faith in the veteran receiver by signing him to a three-year, $66 million contract this offseason, with $44 million guaranteed.

Before his injury last season, Godwin was having one of the best stretches of his career. Through the first seven games, he led the league with 50 receptions, ranked second in yards with 576, and had five touchdowns. He already sits second in franchise history behind Mike Evans in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

Wirfs facing a slower comeback

Tristan Wirfs’ recovery is also trending toward a delayed return. The two-time Pro Bowler had knee surgery last month and was always expected to miss the start of the year. The Buccaneers’ offensive line will be tested without him in the early weeks.

Bucs’ offense taking early hits

The timing is difficult for Tampa Bay. Godwin’s slow recovery, combined with a neck injury to Jalen McMillan, who is expected to start the season on injured reserve, leaves the receiver room thin. McMillan may not return until after the team’s Week 9 bye.

Tampa starts the season on the road at Atlanta on September 7.
