Cal Raleigh just keeps doing his thing.

In the process, he keeps making MLB history and hanging out on lists with all-time greats, like Yankees legend Mickey Mantle.

The latest is this: On Friday night, Raleigh’s 46th home run put him exactly on pace with Mantle’s legendary 1961 season.

That year, Mantle finished with 54 home runs. Through 123 team games, he had 46. That’s the same number of games and homers Raleigh is at right now, per MLB Network’s Sarah Langs.

This is particularly notable because Raleigh has a chance at a Mantle record.

Those 54 homers hit by Mantle in 1961 are the record for a single-season home run total by a switch-hitter.

That mark has stood for 64 years.

Raleigh, in his magical season, has a chance to break it.

He’s hit four home runs in the past week and is certainly heating up. The Mantle mark is in play.

First up is 48 homers, the Salvador Perez single-season catcher homer record. But that seems like a foregone conclusion at this point from the 46 Raleigh has.

It’s that 54 Mantle career best that is the one that could come down to the wire.

If Raleigh surpassed Mantle, that’d be the kind of accomplishment that could give him a legitimate American League MVP case.

Raleigh, somehow, hasn’t slowed down in mid-August despite catching every day and going through the physical trials that come from that.

He’s a star defender, too, and clearly he knows how to hit the baseball a long way. He’s doing it in a way that Mantle once did. That’s legendary.
