Chelsea are all set to kick off their 2025-26 Premier League campaign with a home game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Blues go into the season on the back of a successful last campaign, where they qualified for the Champions League and won the UEFA Conference League, along with the Club World Cup.

Additionally, they have added serious attacking depth to their squad with the signings of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian this summer.

However, just before their season kicks off, Enzo Maresca has been dealt a blow as key defender Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury and will be out for most of the season.

Following his injury, there has been speculation that Chelsea could sign another centre-back as his replacement this summer.

In the press conference ahead of the game against Crystal Palace, Maresca confirmed that he would like the club to do so, but added that it depends on the club’s owners.

Maresca states that the Chelsea owners may not grant him his transfer wish

Chelsea have already splashed the cash on a number of players this summer, and they could easily sign a centre-back to replace Colwill.

However, Maresca revealed that the Chelsea owners are looking for someone within the existing squad to step up in the defender’s absence.

“I think we need a central defender. We are looking for an internal solution, but as I said, the club know exactly what I think,” Maresca said via Chelsea’s YouTube channel.

If Chelsea does not sign a central defender to replace Colwill, it’s a great opportunity for someone from the existing squad to step up and fill the void.

The Blues currently have Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah in their ranks, and it’ll be interesting to see who steps up to the plate in Colwill’s absence.
