Gianluigi Donnarumma’s path toward a move to Man City has started to open after Man United decided to keep faith in Andre Onana for the new season.

According to The i Paper, City have been in contact with the PSG star’s representatives for months over a possible switch to the Etihad.

For a long time United were viewed as serious contenders for the 26-year-old, who reportedly earns between £210,000 [$284,000] and £230,000 [$311,000] a week in Paris.

According to the sources, his wage demands do not fit with United’s current salary structure and would almost certainly increase if he were to move.

With Onana winning his race to be fit for August 17 opener against Arsenal and receiving the full backing of Ruben Amorim, United’s focus has shifted away from signing a new number one.

City’s interest is reportedly tied directly to the future of Ederson, who has attracted attention from Galatasaray.

Any move for Donnarumma is expected to happen only if Ederson leaves, although James Trafford’s return from Burnley has already provided competition for the starting spot.

Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG

PSG’s Donnarumma stance and what next for Man City

This week, Donnarumma’s transfer prospects became clearer after his exclusion from PSG’s Super Cup squad, leading him to release a statement on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.” The statement read.

With one year left on his contract, PSG are open to selling him for less than their initial £26m [$35m] valuation to avoid losing him for free.

His agent Enzo Raiola has said publicly that the goalkeeper would be open to reducing his wages to stay in France.

But according to some French sources, PSG had already made him an improved offer which was turned down.

The club’s signing of Lucas Chevalier this summer has been interpreted as a move to prepare for life without the Italian.

Reportedly, Chelsea remain long-term admirers but are satisfied with their current options.

City is reportedly now the destination Donnarumma prefers, with some sources describing the chance to sign him for a reduced fee as too tempting to ignore.

That opportunity will depend on whether City can first create room in their squad by completing Ederson’s sale before the transfer window closes.
